Dharma's Garden Seasonal Apprenticeship

Participants in the Dharma’s Garden Seasonal Apprenticeship Program learn about the art of small-scale sustainable agriculture, including an introduction to principles and practices of Permaculture and Biodynamic farming.  Guided by expert staff,  participants deepen their knowledge of cultivating the earth through positive, purposeful work.  Our apprenticeship program is an opportunity to create meaningful connections with the surrounding community and to the earth.

Topics will include:

  • Basics of gardening, farming, and food production

  • Permaculture principles and practices

  • Intro to Biodynamic farming

  • Composting & soil fertility

  • Basic botany and plant recognition

  • Planting and transplanting

  • Harvesting

  • Food preparation

  • Floral design

  • Operating a Garden Stand

The program begins in May and runs through October, though the specific days/dates and frequency of participation are flexible.  Apprentices typically choose two mornings per week for some serious farm work, and can attend any classes, workshops, or other events free of additional charge (recommended, but not required).  Successful completion of the program requires only that apprentices participate in a minimum of 100 hours of scheduled work over the course of the season.  Participation in Friday afternoon harvests and Saturday morning markets are encouraged, but do not count toward the overall hours.

The cost to enroll is $1500 (for participants under the age of 18, there is an additional fee, bringing the total cost to $2500).  Apprentices who complete the program will receive $1500 back in the form of a stipend.  For those who can’t afford the initial fee, grant funding may be available to help cover all or part of the cost, just indicate on the application that you are requesting financial assistance, and we will follow up with you (apprentices receiving financial assistance will still receive the full stipend after completion of the program).
